The Early Nikon Telescopes
Photos by Glenn L. Holzer, notes by Fred Krughoff
Telescopes are in Nikon
Incorporated catalogs in 1955 alongside the Nikon S2. Two
were listed, a 2 inch and a 2 1/2 inch. They were likely available
much earlier, since the first Nikon sales representative for
Nikon Incorporated, Al Levin, sold Nikon microscopes during
the time he was taking delivery on Nikon synced "M" cameras.
Glenn says the telescope
performs really well on moon and planets and isn't affected
by atmospherics as is usual with larger apertures. He believes
the telescope is a simple achro doublet F/15.
The setup below was used
on a day Glenn was observing sun spots, using the Nikon sun
projector. Glenn has made an adapter to use standard 1.25"
TeleVue Plossl eyepieces. (Televue Plossls are the finest
eyepieces of the 50° apparent field of view class. Because
of noticeably less astigmatism and lateral color at field's
edge, they deliver very sharp images.)
Complete telescope set up,
right, detail of the tripod and mount.

Typical beautiful Nikon wooden case, similar to those provided
with all the long Nikon rangefinder lenses.

Sun projector attached to telescope.
Thanks to Glenn for sharing
his telescope with the NHS!
